In today’s technology driven world, cybersecurity is a term we hear with increasing frequency.  The possibility of a cyberattack threatens virtually every industry, and each in their unique ways. What kinds of threats affect oil and gas companies, and how can you handle them if they arise?

Vulnerabilities in the Oil and Gas Industry

As more of our population becomes technologically literate, cyberattacks are increasing in both frequency and sophistication. Hackers are turning to more elaborate avenues to break through defenses and steal confidential information. DNV-GL, an oil and gas research firm, recently helped Norway identify vulnerabilities to its cybersecurity in offshore drilling operations. While the study focused on Scandinavian oil companies, DNV-GL states that their findings are applicable to oil and gas operations around the world. These findings include:

  • A lack of awareness and/or training among employees. Without appropriate knowledge of cybersecurity, employees may inadvertently leave their companies vulnerable to attacks.
  • Remote work during routine maintenance. Without the company’s firewalls and extra security measures, remote networks may be easier for hackers to infiltrate.
  • Using flawed systems. Many IT departments are aware of flaws in their systems but lack the funds or support to fix them. Using flawed systems in the production environment leaves companies vulnerable.
  • A disconnected culture. Oil and gas companies have a responsibility to ensure that all vendors and outside suppliers follow appropriate precautions when handling sensitive data.
  • The Bring Your Own Device movement. When businesses allow employees to use their personal devices for work operations, they’re leaving themselves open to hackers. Employee devices should follow business protocols.
  • Aging infrastructure. Oil and gas companies must take stock to ensure their technology framework is capable of handling today’s threats.

The Importance of “Big Data” to the Oil and Gas Industries

One of the common buzzwords we hear when talking about cybersecurity is the notion of “Big Data.” This term simply refers to the amount of information we amass online on a daily basis: credit card numbers, personal information, client demographics, and the like. In industries like compliance, health, and finance, Big Data poses a compelling threat to security. These industries are bound by law to take steps to protect their information.

The oil and gas industry may not have to worry about protecting credit card numbers or account information from hackers, but Big Data still is a concern. For example, equipment may be furnished with sensors that collect data for return on investment and best practices purposes. Trade secrets like these can be valuable in the hands of a competitor.

What Can We Do to Increase Our Cybersecurity?

Creating a comprehensive cybersecurity plan is as easy as identifying and addressing the vulnerabilities in your company. Try these actionable tips:

  • Arrange a meeting with your IT department to discuss the current state of your security. Do they feel prepared to counteract a potential threat? Do they see areas in your infrastructure that could use improvement? Design a strategic plan that strikes the appropriate balance between your operating budget and your desired level of security.
  • Consider offering training for your employees. Each of your workers needs to be aware of the importance of security, even if they’re not directly involved with collecting data. With the popularity of the BYOD movement, employees should take extra precautions when pursuing work remotely.
  • Ensure your vendors and outside help are treating your data with the same provisions you do. Any break in the chain can leave you vulnerable to attack.

With a little preventive planning, your oil and gas business can be equipped to handle a security threat. Make improving your cybersecurity a priority this year.
