As the role of land professionals continues to evolve, reading industry literature is the best way to anticipate changes coming down the pike, make better on-the-job decisions and become positioned as an expert in the field. For landmen, there are three primary sources from which a wide variety of industry publications are available.

The Landman’s Guide to Industry Resources

Though all landmen are familiar with the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL), not everyone is aware of the many publications available from the association’s bookstore. With over 80 industry documents and online courses available for purchase, a few stand out as the most beneficial for landmen:

  • Oil and Gas Land Reference Volume. Required reading for professionals who want to take the CPL exam, the Oil and Gas Land Reference Volume is intended to provide an overview of practices, procedures and information related to the profession. Whether taking the exam or not, landmen value this publication as a go-to resource.
  • Understanding and Negotiating the Oil & Gas Farmout Agreement. When agreements must be made to use land for oil or gas exploration, negotiation becomes a necessary skill for landmen. This publication provides a thorough review of the Farmout Agreement and suggestions for negotiation.
  • Oil & Gas Law Books. Choose an oil and gas law resource that sorts by state, topics or both. Helpful resources for landmen, the Oil & Gas Law Books are recommended reading and useful as a reference tool.
  • Landman Magazine.  Published by the AAPL, Landman Magazine provides bi-weekly news, updates and industry-related information landmen find useful.
  • Mining and Land Resources Institute Seminar. One example of many, this Mining and Land Resources Institute seminar is offered at the AAPL’s online bookstore. As opposed to text, purchasing this resource provides access to a recording of the latest event, which may earn landmen continuing education credits.

Like the AAPL, Landman Insider focuses on the concerns and interests of professional landmen. Written and maintained by professional landmen, Landman Insider reports on issues affecting the industry, recent job opportunities and industry book reviews. Previous recommendations from Landman Insider include Oil and Gas Title Examination by George J Morgenthaller and Landman Lease and Title Manual by John Childers and Joe Judd.

Dedicating an hour or more a week to reading industry publications will result in enhanced industry knowledge, informed decision making and career advancement.
